Fast Stitching and Slow Stitching on Sunday

I have two projects I want to work on later today. First, my fast project will be a little tag blankie for Baby L. I am going to use this free Craftsy pattern for one side.

20140216-082016.jpg
And I will use minkie on the back.

If I get that done, I will work on hand piecing this while watching TV with Mr. Wonderful.

20140216-082238.jpg
I bought a couple scrap packs from Homestead Hearth. I cannot say enough about their fantastic customer service. I ordered Thursday, had a tracking number within a couple hours,  and my package arrived on Saturday.

20140216-082350.jpg
I cut some more hexagons from them last night in preparation for my trip to Arizona.

20140216-082448.jpg
That is about 80 hexagons or 5 rows worth. I need to cut a bunch more! Not sure how big this will end up.

And a couple gratuitous pics of Baby L.

He is wearing a preemie outfit in that last photo!

And Daughter #3 sent me this picture of the grand dog.

20140216-082756.jpg
I get to meet her when I travel to AZ as well. I can’t wait!

Happy Sunday! Hop over to Kathy’s blog to see what others are working on today.

A Small Finish

I didn’t get the wheelchair quilt done by Wednesday but I did get it in the frame yesterday.

20140215-115646.jpg
Just a simple loop pattern done freehand but I think it works.

20140215-115731.jpg
I spent a little time playing with EQ.

20140215-120020.jpg
Yesterday, Mr. Wonderful and I went to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaraunt.

Chicken Fajitas were awesome! After that, we went to see Monuments Men. It was excellent.

Time for work! Have a great Saturday!

Finish it Up Friday – Midwinter Blues

I finished up my small Midwinter Blues quilt this week. I love Lori’s quilt alongs and this one has been great fun. The instructions for each step are still up and you can find step one here. I really love how this little quilt turned out. I made my blocks a bit bigger than hers and my quilt finishes at about 27 inches square. I am thinking about making a bigger quilt with these same blocks.

20140214-061105.jpg
I quilted this with Superior mono-poly in the top and Magnasoft in the bottom. I used a piece of toile I purchased way back when we lived in France for the back.

20140214-061301.jpg
I love it in my family room.

20140214-061350.jpg
My son made this quilt rack for me in a high school shop class. I love it!

Last night I pulled out these little 4″ log cabin blocks that I made about a year ago.

20140214-061638.jpg

20140214-061654.jpg

I made a few more while hubby was on a phone meeting. I don’t love making these but I love them when they are done. Maybe because it makes such a mess.

20140214-061856.jpg
Maybe because they are a bit fiddly. Maybe they take so long because I am OCD about cutting threads and cleaning everything up after every paper pieced seam. At any rate, I am up to 25 blocks now. My next goal is to get to 36. Hope I can do that before losing interest and putting it away for another year!

Today, Daughter #1 is coming over to sew. Yay!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all!

Decisions, decisions…

I got the bow tie top all put together. It is currently 54″ x 60″. I am trying to decide if I should add borders or not.

20140213-071627.jpg
This is for someone that is fairly short but I wish it were a bit longer. I thought of adding some of this at the top and bottom.

20140213-071731.jpg
I also have a few DS prints to choose from.

20140213-071929.jpg
I will probably wait and ask Daughter #1 since it is her friend the quilt will go to. What do you think is the perfect size for a nap quilt?

Work in Progress Wednesday

First of all, thank you all so much for the lovely comments regarding our beautiful grand son, Baby L. Even from a distance he brings so much joy to us! It seems every spare minute, we have been texting, calling, face timing with our son. I apologize for not responding to individual comments this week. I just haven’t been able to keep up. I do appreciate each and every one.

Yesterday I got these bow ties sewn into rows before work.

20140212-080735.jpg
They were left over from Daughter #1’s wedding quilt. Can you believe I had 90 blocks left over?

D#1 and SIL have a friend going through chemo. So I am going to get this top finished and then she is going to come over and quilt it on my Avante.

BTW, here are some pics I snapped the other day when she was over sewing with me.

20140212-081052.jpg
She brought the grand dog who never left her side.

I also finished sewing the rows of the hexie quilt together.

20140212-085108.jpg
Time to get a bit of housecleaning done before work today.

So much goodness!

Yesterday sure was an exciting day! I spent most of it with Daughter #1 shopping for fabric and planning out bedding for Baby Q due in June. These are the fabrics she chose.

20140211-082500.jpg
She worked on a mobile with a wee bit of help from me.

20140211-082549.jpg
Isn’t it adorable? Those are little whales hanging amongst the “water drops.”

I started piecing the rows together for this:

20140211-082730.jpg
And I came up with a plan to use these leftover blocks from the wedding quilt I made for Daughter #1 last year.

20140211-082851.jpg
All this was great distraction while awaiting news of our beautiful grandson’s arrival. And here is one more pic of our beautiful Daughter in Love and Baby Liam.

We are so blessed!

Design Wall Monday

I finished piecing the blocks for the wheelchair quilt this weekend. I hope to sew them together and a narrow border added today.

20140209-225310.jpg
I also threw my calendar blocks up on the wall.

20140209-225353.jpg
I made these in May of 2010 so it is time they got finished.

I loaded my little Midwinter Blues quilt into the frame and started quilting last night. I also want to finish this today.

A Year of Red and White Challenges

SewCalGal is hosting a Year of Red and White Challenges. For more info, click here.

The first part of the challenge is to share a red and white quilt you made prior to 2014. So here is mine. I made this quilt in the spring of 1997. We were homeschooling our kids at the time and I hung it in our school room when we lived in France.

20140209-150047.jpg

20140209-150058.jpg
At that time, I used a CAD program called Visio to draft my block patterns. Some of these were paper pieced and some traditionally pieced. It is all done by machine. This represents some of my earliest machine quilting. The crosshatching was done with a walking foot and the Baptist Fan border was done with FMQ on my 1955 Singer 201. I love that machine!

Please check out the other entires for this phase of the challenge by clicking here.

Spectacular Saturday and Slow Stitching Sunday

Yesterday, Mr. Wonderful and I took a little road trip. If you are going to take a road trip, you have to have a project…. So I got this out:

20140209-084412.jpg
I did a tutorial back here on machine piecing these but I enjoy hand piecing as well. Because I do not sew into the seam allowances, I can hand and machine piece interchangeably on this project. Here is the kit I took.

20140209-084657.jpg
I have an adorable sewing kit from a SQT swap partner but apparently I put it in a very safe place, so safe that it is safe even from me! I am on a mission to locate that today. I will work on this some more while watching the Olympics today.

I also plan to cut a bunch more scraps into hexies for this as I will take it to Arizona when I go to meet my new grandson. We are on full out baby watch right now!

And this is a hint of where our road trip took us:

20140209-085024.jpg
You weren’t supposed to take pictures during the show. Mr. Wonderful got tickets to Cirque du Soleil! It was amazing and we had perfect seats.

Have you heard about the Red and White Challenges over at SewCalGal’s blog? Today is the last day to enter a red and white quilt made before 2014. There will be other red and white challenges through the year. I will post my red and white later today but here is a sneak peak.

20140209-085425.jpg
I hope to take pictures outside this afternoon and then I will do a full post about it.

I am linking up with Kathy for Slow Stitching Sunday. Also linking up with A Quilting Reader’s Garden for Hexie Weekend.
