Vintage Painted Quilt Top

I picked this quilt top up at an antique fair. The blocks are painted with state flowers.

I’ve never seem anything quite like it. It is beautifully done. Here are some of my favorite blocks.

It does have a bit of bleeding.

It is entirely hand pieced. It is about 53 by 70 inches. Arizona was the 48th state and became so in 1912. So this dates to sometime after that. Hawaii and Alaska are not included.

Not sure what this stain is.

Overall, it’s in good condition. I haven’t tried to clean it at all. You all know how I love hand quilting vintage tops, but I don’t see myself doing this one.

It’s been fun to study, but I think it’s time for it to find a new home.

If you would like to purchase this sweet piece, I’m asking $75 and that includes shipping within the US. No international sales. I can take payment by PayPal. Just leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

Thanks and have a great day!

Misadventures in Knitting

I’ve taken some time to play this week. At times, it felt a lot more like work.

I did manage to knit this hat.

I’m not a big fan of the looser knitting. But I thought it would work well for a produce bag, so I tried that next.

Nope, nope, nope.

I tried several different types of yarn, but it seems to like regular old DK acrylic yarn best. I made this hat with some yarn leftovers from E2s Christmas scarf.

I had lots of dropped stitches to fix.

I’m happy to say that E1 and E2 loved them, even with the imperfections.

I had hoped I could use this with the grands, but if I’m frustrated, they will be. I’m not necessarily giving up yet, but it hasn’t been as much fun as regular knitting.

I think I’ll go back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Have a great day!

This and That

I babysat my grand dog Lola last weekend. She is Winslow’s sister/littermate.

I just finished this book, quite a good read.

I went to see my mom recently. Winslow loves her.

I cross the Mackinaw bridge coming and going.

My sister and I visited Paul.

The mister sent me this. He knows I love nerd jokes.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ The ABC Quilt

Done with plenty of time to mail it!

I bought a fuzzy fleece blanket for the backing. You can see here that I bound it by machine for durability. It isn’t my best binding job.

I quilted in a large meander right over top of the appliqué. Some of the fleece poked up through the stitches. Ugh.

The back is nice and cozy though.

Washing it improved the pokies.

And increased the texture.

I really don’t like quilting with this stuff on the back. It is stretchy and hard to work with. But this nana will do pretty much anything for her boys!

Have a great day!

Progress

As a reward for moving ahead on the ABC quilt, I did a bit of work on these economy blocks.

Red is my favorite color, but I don’t have as much on hand as I thought. I think I used it all up on this quilt .

So this is where I am at. I thought this would scratch the itch for this idea; but, it hasn’t. I think it’s too small. I’ll need to cut a few more blocks.

Have a great day!

ABC Quilt

I’ve decided to go with this simple layout.

I do want to add a border to make it bigger. These are the two options that I have on hand.

I’m leaning toward the polka dots.

Here is a closeup of the appliqué.

I initially planned to make a twin sized quilt, but I think it will be a throw quilt instead. I want him to drag it around and use it up!

Have a great day!

Down to Business….

My sweet, Little L has a birthday coming up. I knew I wanted to make an alphabet quilt for him, though I didn’t have a plan. I still don’t. But I appliquéd these blocks while I was still in AZ and brought them back with me. I used the AccuQuilt Carefree Alphabet die and the free embroidery files that come with to appliqué the letters.

I intentionally cut the blocks at odd angles, though some look way too straight.

I had some random blue bits on the cutting table, so I cut some alternate squares from them.

It might work. Those corners though… Time to get back to work.

WAIT! Before I go, AccuQuilt has some amazing sales right now! You know I’m always looking for a deal. 😁 Well, they have a bunch of Studio dies at Overstock prices of up to 70% off!

As you can see, they have other great deals as well, but I’ll be shopping studio dies this week. Although, that new fox die is adorable!

Have a great day!

Something New

Remember the blue pieces I set aside from my scrap bucket? I cut them up!

These blocks finish at 6 inches.

I’m not sure how many more I’ll make, but this will probably not be a big quilt.

Have a great day!

A New Toy

I picked up a new toy. It looks like a toy, doesn’t it? I bought that beautiful new yarn and quickly remembered why I don’t knit much anymore. My hands don’t like it.

I’ve walked by a gazillion knitting machines at sales over the years. They are very intimidating. But this was a cheap option (Facebook Marketplace) to try it out.

I thought the grands could use it to make hats. Casting on was easy. Cranking it was easy.

Oops! Something went wrong!

I didn’t do a proper cast off since I knew this would get unraveled anyway. This shows about 30 rows of knitting and took a matter of minutes.

I like the way the knitting feels. It is very even, though a bit looser than when I knit by hand. I can see the boys having a lot of fun with this.

It is NOT a replacement for a big knitting machine. But might be a good intro to it. I’d really love a circular sock knitting machine someday, but it isn’t in the budget. I found a used flat bed knitting machine on FB Marketplace, but it’s still $200. A lot for me to spend when I have no idea what I’m doing.

I still think I’ll have fun playing with this.

Have a great day!

Messing Around….

I had a bit of an idea….not a full blown idea, mind you. Just an inkling. But I decided to start, thinking the rest would come.

Hmmm…. I still don’t feel like I’m any closer. Only the seam on the far left is sewn. None of the circles are fused yet.

I’ve got lots thinking to do.

Have a great day!
