Charity quilts….

I really hate the term “charity quilt.”  It seems to have such a negative connotation. But darned if I can come up with a better term! Anyway, the following quilts were made and given to our local shelter for women and children. They gave me an opportunity to practice my machine quilting skills while creating something to hopefully, bless others.

This was my first try at using a pantograph. I should have taken a detail shot!

This is the back:

This one was actually much brighter in person. I really need to work on my photography skills!

I have a few more I will post later. Until next time….

What I am working on today…

When I made the last QOV, I cut enough pieces for a second top. So after church today, I started piecing more hourglass blocks.

I am also trying to decide what to do with this panel, purchased more than a year ago:

Any ideas?

Hmmmm….

I put this top together a few months ago but still can’t decide how to quilt it. It is only about 36″ square and won’t take long to finish once I start. I really don’t have a purpose for it yet. I would love to see it covered with random feathers but my skill level won’t permit that. Any suggestions?

I used a pic from my phone and just realized the whole top isn’t even showing in this post! Oh well. I am learning the art of phone blogging. Perhaps later today I can post a better picture.

Until next time….

First QOV for 2013

I just finished my first Quilt of Valor for 2013.

QOV 003 (2) QOV9 001

The first pic shows my random lines with occasional loops  quilting. I just did a simple meander in the border.  Now I need to make my presentation case and add a label while I wait for my destination address.

Until next time…

Wedding quilt progress!

Number 1 daughter is getting married in May. I am determined to finish the quilt before the wedding this time! She has seen the fabrics  (all Denyse Schmidt from Joann’s) and approved the pattern, simple but very much her style. It will be queen sized. All the blocks are finished and I have begun putting them together. Here is 1/4 of the blocks pieced together:

A little Kaffe…

I love Kaffe Fassett prints but never really had any of my own until I purchased some charm squares on Etsy. Once I had them, they sat there for ages as I couldn’t decide what to do with them! Finally went with another simple pattern.

I am quite happy with the gray background and navy binding. I recently purchased a bunch of Kaffee fat quarters when I found a good deal on Craftsy so there will be another Kaffe quilt soon….or maybe later!

Until next time….

Another baby quilt….

This is a quilt I made for the baby of my nephew and his lovely wife last year. The fabrics were hand dyed by me. The color in the detail shot is more accurate. Sometimes, the simple patterns are best!

A Modern Baby Quilt

Some dear friends of ours recently had another baby boy! With a little Pinterest sleuthing, I was able to determine the colors the happy momma had in mind. I am quite pleased with how this turned out:

The back is a print I got at IKEA a few years ago. I sure wish I had bought every last yard of it! I quilted this in a random grid with little loops thrown in here and there. I am pleased with the quilting though it did require removing the quilt from the frame and reloading it halfway through to get the lines going in the other direction. It was definitely worth the extra work. The quilting lines are about 1/2″ apart.

Until next time….

A King Size Wedding Quilt!

My son married the love of his life just over a year ago. I hoped to have their wedding quilt done before their first anniversary. And I made it! Though there were moments I was not at all sure…… I had already started on the quilt when my dear son called to tell me that they had purchased a king size bed. What? I have NEVER made a quilt this big. Time to add more blocks! It wouldn’t fit on my machine quilting frame so I added the borders in a quilt-as-you-go fashion.

My bed is queen size and I took this pic before I sent the quilt. Here is the back:

I decided I was only going to make one quilt this size so it may as well be double sided!

I chose this pattern because it looked like Z’s and A’s to me for Zach and Anna. This is definitely not my most intricate work but they seem to like it. The top is freemotion quilting with little hidden messages to the happy couple.

Until next time…

First Finish of 2013!

I am still getting to know Barney, my new/used mid arm quilting machine. I am not thrilled with the quilting on this but it is done and hanging up.
