Rock Hounding

Mr. Wonderful and I have a new hobby! I started collecting rocks when I was a little girl. It always seemed like free treasure, even though I just picked up stuff I thought was pretty.

I recently discovered that rock hounding is a big deal out here! So we’ve been having fun learning about it. These photos are from a day spent at Saddle Mountain.

We get to go offroad with Oscar, hike, get exercise, explore, and find “treasure” all at the same time!

Here are a few of our finds.

This bucket needs to be scrubbed up yet.

I love finding rocks with crystals inside.

You can see how the molten rock formed flows in this one.

Here are some things picked up at Lake Pleasant. They need cleaning as well.

We bought a rock tumbler. Now I’m on the hunt for a wet saw so we can see what’s inside.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Peppermint

It’s done! Big stitch quilting with perle cotton or crochet thread goes pretty quickly. The first two photos were taken before washing.

I played chicken with my thread, but I won!

The rest of these photos were after washing. It crinkled up beautifully!

I washed this in my washer/dryer.

You can see here that not all the yellowing came out.

I remember paying $20 for this top many years ago. I sure got my money’s worth!

Have a great day!

Progress

It’s in the frame!

This is the pantograph I chose.

I ran out of bobbin thread and “quilted” half a row without thread. When I redid that area, I had unknowingly shifted the pantograph, leaving this ugly mess.

I sprayed it with a water bottle and let it dry. Ta daaaa! All better!

I noticed a lot of resistance when I tried to advance the quilt in the frame. I found the problem!

Silly Willy. 😂

Have a great day!

Tree of Life

Did you see that Lori over at Humble Quilts is making a Tree of Life quilt this year? She has invited anyone who wants to join her. Click here for her first post with lots of inspiration. Click here for block instructions.

I made this tiny tree back in 2019.

And I made this wall quilt for my mom.

I plan to sew along with Lori to make a bed quilt for me. I just have to decide on colors. I was smitten when I saw this quilt by AbyQuilts. So I might follow her lead.

I have the die shown below and I just found out it is on clearance!

Take a look at this deal from AccuQuilt !

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t take part without this die. I’m a bit lazy like that. 😂

Also, AccuQuilt Studio Dies and Die Bundles are half off until January 31st!

Have a great day!

The Ugly Quilt

I decided to knock this quilt off my UFO list.

I just wanted it done.

I hope to be quilting it soon. Maybe that will help?

2024 Wrap-Up ~ Large Quilts

Each year, I like to do several posts looking back at my finishes for the past year. This post shows the largest quilts I finished. I didn’t make nearly as many bed size quilts as I have in the past. Most of these are throw size.

Here they are.

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

Binding Time!

No, I’m not finished quilting the Peppermint quilt. But when you start hand quilting at the edges, you can go ahead and bind before you quilt the middle. The round of quilting goi g around the outside is more than half the quilting anyway.

The photo above makes it look as though the quilting is done, but I assure you, there is a big unquilted space in the middle.

Have a great day!

Perfectly Pointless

Maria Schell offered a Zoom class last weekend. At the last minute, I decided to sign up.

We were told to prepare 12 solid fabrics and some neutrals. Here is my fabric pull.

And my neutrals. I actually didn’t use any of the neutrals.

And there are the parts and pieces I made.

My rainbow of solids ended up not being a great pull. But did I mention I waited until the last minute? 😂

That’s okay. I actually liked my neutral pile and added some fabrics to it. Her workshop was based on her book, Improv Patchwork, which I have. I just wish I could find it! I’m going to ponder this pile while I keep looking for my book.

In the meantime time, all those bits I made will be sourdough starter for future improv projects.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ QOV

My son in law asked if I would make a Quilt of Valor for a friend of his. Here it is!

I love this pattern, it looks harder than it is.

This is the pantograph that I used.

Have a great day!

Throwback Thursday

Here is a post from five years ago. Enjoy!

Straights and Arrows
I just love this Quilt of Valor! The top was pieced by my good friend Zenia, from A Quilted Passion .

The pattern is a Zenia original called Straights and Arrows. It is available on her blog.

I quilted it with Military Gold Glide thread and used a panto from Urban Elementz called Amoebas Gone Wild.

Zenia provided the backing and binding and I finished it up.

In January, it will be presented to a deserving veteran.

Have a great day!
