Throwback Thursday

This post originally appeared here nine years ago! I still have and still love this quilt. Enjoy the post!

My wonderful hubby took me up to the antique festival that is held in a nearby town three times each summer. I always seem to find something calling my name! Here is my greatest find of the day:

This is a big quilt measuring about 97″ square. There are 36 pieced blocks. The quilting has a 3/8″ crosshatch in the plain blocks and 1/4″ parallel lines in the pieced blocks. The backing was brought to the front and stitched down by hand to create a very narrow binding. Sadly, the fabrics in the stars are very deteriorated. This is by far the oldest quilt I own. I am pretty sure it is pre-civil war. Any ideas?

And I know you are all dying to know what I paid…….

Drumroll please…..

$20

Yep, $20 and she was all mine. She is far from mint but I have saved her from being cut up for teddy bears. I love it

Stash Enhancement

I hit up a local estate sale last week that advertised fabric. I picked up some great older fabrics

This box contains 100 FQs of an old Fons and Porter line called Savannah.

I also found older pieces of Smithsonian fabrics, Judie Rothermel, and Shelburne Museum Collections as well.

Harriet Hargrave and Marsha McCloskey.

And a bit of wool.

That was fun!

Have a great day!

Vintage Block Challenge

Lori at Humble Quilts issued a challenge some months ago now, to make something from a vintage orphan block.I kept changing my mind and am only now getting started! I decided to use these vintage block pieces.

And I’m using this die from my AccuQuilt 5” Qube.

Here are my little rectangles.

As I was cutting, I remembered this little block I had made some years ago out of pieces from these same vintage blocks. I might be able to include this.

That would definitely change my original plan, but there is some possibility here.

I really need to get a move on with this. The due date is Monday.

Have a great day!

Another Mini!

Scrolling through my saved pins on Pinterest , led me to this little gem.

I have dies for that!

These are from my 5” Qube Angles Set. The scraps were from the bin.

Hanging diamonds seemed a good quilting choice.

I used a single fold binding and the back ended up a bit wonky.

Now, what can I try next?

Have a great day!

Slow Stitching Sunday

I’m on the home stretch with this quilt. These were my three binding choices.

I ended up going with the last one. The hand stitching is going to take a while. This quilt finished at 102” by 108”.

I do enjoy the view of the back!

Have a great day!

Sewing Room Storage

You may recall that I bought a classroom storage unit for my Arizona sewing room. I love it! So when I saw this on FB Marketplace, I snapped it up for my Michigan room.

Daughter #3 found that Magis Spin Chair for me. I’ve wanted one for ages! It’s the perfect thinking spot. Anyway, classroom furniture is quite useful for sewing storage. I just picked up this locker unit at a garage sale for $5.

It’s perfect for my long die boards and bolts of fabric. Across the street from that sale, I picked up this step stool.

Another $5 find, it’s just right for reaching to the top of my design wall. and yes, I know it’s for kids, but it is extremely sturdy and works for short, little me.

My vintage red Cosco stool will go out to AZ in the fall. My design wall there is much taller.

This kind of furniture is extremely expensive brand new, but if you are lucky enough to find it used, snap it up!

Before I go, AccuQuilt is having some great sales right now and continuing through Memorial Day weekend.

Have a great day!

Finish It Up Friday ~ Deanna’s Favorite

I’ve decided to call this quilt, Deanna’s Favorite. I must be her favorite, since she gave me this gorgeous top!

I love this kind of quilting. I enjoy doing it, and I love the results.

Sigh…..so lovely.

After I took the photos above, I gently washed it in the bathtub. I expected the claret red to run.

It turned the cream backing into the palest of pinks, but surprisingly, the fabrics in the blocks were unaffected. Washing and drying took the texture up a notch.

This last picture was actually two photos stitched together. The left half shows before washing, and the right half after.

This is such a satisfying finish! Thank you, dear Deanna, for your generosity.

Have a great day, everyone!

Happy Mail!

Did you see the new die launch during the AccuQuilt Live party on Tuesday?

It landed on my doorstep yesterday! The 5” GO! Qube and Companion sets!

I couldn’t wait to try this out. I quickly picked something off one of my Pinterest boards and hit the scrap bucket.

This is the die I used.

The pieces are pretty tiny.

I hand quilted it and stitched down the self binding after dinner.

The pink sashing is a bit bright!

It fit this little doll bed pretty well.

If you are interested, AccuQuilt has introductory pricing as well as other sales this week. Click here for details.

I think I’ll cut out another little quilt today. ☺️

Have a great day!

Quilting

I was going to do Baptist Fans on this scrappy quilt, but I realized if I did that, the birds in the border would be flying upside down.

So I decided to go with this pantograph. I’ve never used it before.

This is the thread I’m using.

Hmmmm…. This is a tough one to do. Each row takes over half an hour.

I think I like it. I’m not ripping it out! It’s definitely going to take a while.

Have a great day!

This and That

I pulled these blocks out of my vintage stash. I think they all work together color wise, but the size variations…. ooof!

My sweet neighbor, Kelly, has been so sweet to send me pictures of my cacti in AZ. Isn’t this incredible?

I’m not a country music fan, but my dad loved Johnny Cash. He even sat in on a jam session with him before he became famous. Daughter #1 found this shirt for me because it reminded her of him. I love it!

Mr. Wonderful found me in an outlet store! 😂

Happy mail means more secret sewing to come!
