I read the Little House books for the first time way back in second grade. I’ve read them countless times since then. So visiting De Smet was a bucket list item for me. I was not disappointed!

This is the desk where Laura wrote her books.

Her sewing kit.

Her daughter, Rose, was an accomplished seamstress as well as an author.

This is the surveyors house from By the Shores of Silver Lake.

Our tour guide was excellent.

This is the attic where Mary and Laura slept.

And Ma and Pa’s room.

This is the last Ingall’s home. Pa built it after Laura was married.

There were some lovely quilts there.

This covered wagon is similar to what the Ingall’s likely used. It was so much smaller than I expected.

I bought this book and am greatly enjoying it!

Have a great day!

I really enjoyed seeing these pictures, beautiful quilts. Thank you. Hope someday to go myself.
Seeing your photos of the bedrooms with their lace curtains, shades, and floral wallpaper immediately transported me back nearly 75 years to my grandmother’s house in rural Pennsylvania. I loved exploring behind the curtained closet doorways and trying on my aunt’s outdated shoes, not to mention sleeping in one of those old iron beds piled high with blankets. Thanks for the visit down memory lane and your photos of all the quilts.
Wh
i had a desk very similar to Laura’s, only the legs were straight, not curved. The desk had belonged to my aunt and then my mom. I started having it when I was in elementary school and continued using it for many years. My husband had to repair the lid that opened. I’ve passed it on to one of my son’s family’s and it’s fun to see it continued to be used!
