Feather Practice

I took a Craftsy class by Angela Walters this week called Free Motion Feathers. She is a great teacher and I learned a lot. I need lots of practice! I had extra backing and batting at the end of the last QOV that I quilted so it was a perfect time for a little practice. I used cream thread on black fabric and two layers of batting. Here are some pics of my doodling.

Clearly, I do not spend enough time just doodling and playing with FMQ! Up close, this looks awful, from a distance not so bad. It would be better with matching thread to hide all my oopsies. I want to master feathers but I need to take the time to practice if I am ever going to get there. If I wanted you all to think I was a master quilter, I wouldn’t share these pictures! But this blog is about the good, the bad, and the ugly of my quilting journey so there it is.

I am linking up with Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation for Needle and Thread Thursdayย and Gemma at Pretty Bobbins.

Love the feathers and fill on photo #6! Angela Walters spoke at our Portland Modern Quilt Guild, and I bought her book and took the modern quilting class on Craftsy. Haven’t done the feathers class yet. I am doing her stuff on my domestic machine. I’m starting with small quilts and working my way up to see how big I can manage.

Here here to the good, bad and ugly! Keepin’ it real–and we can all so relate! But, your feather looks great–I can tell you are trying all forms and styles! You’ll figure out what works best for you and then you’ll be unstoppable.

Great feathers! I think I take the class too.

  9. Your feathers look great! I took the same class and thought it was a great way to learn. I need lots of practice too, but we’ll get there.

  10. Lois says:

Oh, I love the second one!

  11. Bev Parrish says:

WOW!!! Really nice. If you think you need more practice, I think I need to take her class – LOL!!! I haven’t been able to get these down yet. Really nice.

  12. Beautiful practice!! I’m signed up for the same class, but haven’t had the time. I think I’ll be moving it up on my priority list!!

Love your feather practice. Especially the feather with the echo on it. I’ve recently seen a triple vein feather that I want to try. You’re making me want to go and feather something, anything. I have trouble when I try to make an variation of a feather. I do love the heart shape at the top of the feather, how hard was that?

  14. I think your feathers look amazing! I’ve been wanting to take that class but waiting for it to go on sale. I see that you were using a long arm. Do you think the class translates well to someone working on a domestic machine?

  15. Judy Smith says:

Oh my goodness! I’m so envious. Those feathers look great. Maybe I’ll try some today.

  16. Thanks. I’d love to see more people share this: “If I wanted you all to think I was a master quilter, I wouldnโ€™t share these pictures! But this blog is about the good, the bad, and the ugly of my quilting journey so there it is.”
