The challenge this month for the Small Quilt Talk group is to make a small bear paw quilt. A few years ago, I made this one.

Since I already had this one, I wasn’t sure I wanted to make another in nearly the same size. The block itself measures 14 inches.
I had already decided that this year, I would make all the SQT challenge quilts from vintage fabric. And I have vintage fabric.

While digging through my vintage stash, I came across these:
I also decided to make my challenge quilt smaller. My block measures 7 inches finished.

The biggest challenge using vintage scraps will be finding pieces big enough for borders. I managed for this one.
Happy Sunday!

Hi Melanie,
Hmmmm….did you notice my wonky triangles? Haha! Anyway, starch is wonderful when working with small bits. You can starch them until they are almost like paper. I learned that years ago. It really helps although I honestly don’t always bother. I think the biggest thing for me lately has been cutting accurately with my die cutter. I use post it notes for a seam guide on my Featherweight and can get a really accurate 1/4″ that way.
Take care, Katy

What a perfect little jewel of a piece! Great job.
Super cute!
Those are great old Bears Paw blocks. I had to laugh at your vintage stash. There is something irresistible about vintage fabrics. I can’t pass them up, either.

Sweeeet! Do you have any tips for working with the tiny pieces?
I love Bear Paws (and especially in your fabrics!) … maybe that’s one of the patterns I’ll use for a grandson’s quilt? … just not sure that I’d be keen on making a 7″ block! ha!
I have just started collecting vintage fabrics. Mainly I’m on a quest for original feed/flour sacks. I’m not sure I will be able to cut into the ones I’ve ordered that are still full bags đŸ™‚ The history just calls out to me, I think they are wonderful!
