How to get things done….

My daughter asked me the other day how I get so much quilting done. I quickly answered, “It’s because I don’t do housework.” And we laughed and laughed because there is so much truth in that! Then I saw this, and we laughed again!

Seriously, my house is not a wreck but I don’t have little kids at home anymore and I am not fussy. I can’t stand clutter but I don’t mind dust so much!

I quilted the cross quilt yesterday before work. And I have two bits of advice. First, don’t daydream too much:

And don’t be skimpy when cutting the batting:

That was a bit too close for comfort! I decided to go with the swirly panto.

Hopefully, I will get the binding made and put on after work today.

And in the best news of the week department, Daughter #1 and SIL are having a boy!

That makes two little grandsons joining our family this year! Time to start making boy stuff!

The swirls are the perfect complement to this quilt. When you are basting down the quilt top, how do you get a line of stitching so close to the edge of the fabric without it running off the edge? My foot pushes the fabric and eventually things go awry.

  2. you and I sound like kindred spirits! I only cook and clean as much as I absolutely have to. There is too much quilting to be done! Of course, I do have a 9 year old at home, so we have all of his activities as well. Your swirly quilting looks wonderful on your cross quilt! and congrats on the baby boy coming soon!

Thanks so much for sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!

Oh lots of laughs from this today! I saw that same meme & it was totally an LOL moment. I have also been daydreaming & run off the quilt top like that. AND I’ve had a customer quilt that I thought would be “just long enough” on the backing but ended up being 3″ short in the end with all the quilting. Accck! I was able to salvage it by piecing it from the side bits that were nice & wide but whew. Learned my lesson with that. Congrats on another grandson! How exciting!

Love how the swirly pan to turned out!

  7. Lovely cross quilt! I want to make one of those. Everytime I get so close on the batting(sometimes requiring some patching in!) I am like WHY do I do this, haha. Those extra inches will save some tears/screams later. I notice you do a stay stitch along the border, when do you do that?

Your post made me laugh! I just made a cross quilt as a Christmas gift and I loved making it. It is one of my favorite blocks. And congratulations on the baby boy! It must be nice to have grandkids to spoil. My son is 15 so I hope I’m not a grandmother for many more years – maybe 10 at least.

  9. Oh, how true!!! I also can’t stand clutter, though I am much more able to let it go lately. Dusting happens here once a year wether it needs it or not. HA!

Congrats on your new little man!!

  10. Housework – 0, Quilting – won! 🙂 It is the same story at my house! Your quilting is beautiful!!

    Contrats on the grand babies!!

Beautiful quilt. Congrats on the the addition to the family.

  12. Oh my word – I can SO relate to the quilting instead of housework. I’m an empty nester, too, so I can slack more in the housekeeping department and get away with it … plus I’m blessed with a hubby who will chip in with meal preparations and some light housework from time to time so I can keep stitching! 😉 As long as the house is tidy, I can live with it! 😉

Congratulations on the news! 2 new grandsons coming … how awesome! How many grands will this make?

Oh man, almost forgot, Congrats on the little guy!! Can’t wait to see what his quilt looks like.

Oh boy talk about close with the batting, wow! I love the spiral panto for this quilt, so perfect. I wish I could do a panto with those large graceful curves, mine look more like boxes or some multi-sided shape. And tips or tricks for doing large curves on a panto and haveing them come out so wonderfully?

  15. Congratulations! Very exciting news 🙂 Your quilting is lovely!
