A picture taking kind of day…

My daughter is getting to be a wonderful photographer and she inpires me to do more picture taking myself! My husband patiently drove the two of us around this afternoon to take some pictures in our home town, Saginaw. Here are a few of my shots:

Doesn’t this look like Yoda? Ha!

The river…

The Z bridge….

A patchwork of fences….

If these walls could speak….

Iron train bridge, no longer in use….

I have more I will save for another day. Saginaw has been in existence since the 1860s. It has seen its share of good and bad times. It is not all in decay as one might surmise by looking at these photos! However, there is something that attracts me to these places….the history, the beauty in the crumbling bricks and rust, the hope that Saginaw would one day be a city united, once again prosperous and thriving…

I am also hoping that photography will help me to “see” things in a new way, to become more observant, to create better art.

Until next time….

UPDATE 4-13-2010 I recently found some of these pictures manipulated and posted on another blog! PLEASE do not steal my photos! Anything and everything on my blog belongs to ME! It is against copyright law to take anything from my site. Please do the right thing.

    Hi Katy;
Just reading posts on QA, so sorry to hear you’ve had photos pilfered – individuals who do this sort of obscene behavior should be exposed – if only to help the rest of we artists/photographers be on notice and be aware of thieves among us. BTW, your photos are Fabulous – I love this sort of photography, makes one think and wonder about who, what, when, where. I too am drawn to the old and worn places/things when I am out shooting photos – I daydream about the stories that could be told if these things could speak -well, actually they do speak thru the eye of the viewer. Keep on shooting, your work is excellent!

I found them because this person posted a link to their blog on the Quilt Art list! As I wandered through recent posts, there they were. Didn’t even bother to change the file names.

I bet Detroit would be a great place for pics as well! You can find beauty anywhere. I just have to remember to take the time to look :).

I came to see your photos after reading your post on QuiltArt about photo theft. Didn’t read your text, just looked at the pictures and kept telling myself it sure looked like my home town – Detroit. Then I read they were taken in Saginaw – well duh… no wonder it looked similar. Wonderful photos. How did you realize they had been lifted?

Wow Katy, these are wonderful. The reflection on the rail looks like a shoe in for the new IQA Eye of the Quilter for this year.

  5. Those are great photos. I like those old places.
In one of the best plein air painting classes I ever took, the professor took us to old, decrepit parts of the city and ‘forced’ us to find the beauty. It was actually a life-changing experience for me!

Honest to goodness–there look they’re in my old neighborhood (in the industrail valley in Milwaukee..) I love them! Great job.

  7. REally great shots!Although it really hurts this former Michigander’s heart to see Saginaw (and the rest of the state) in such disarray.

I love the photos! Really like the one of the iron bridge reflected in it’s rail. The broken window ones are neat too.
